Nury Vittachi: THE WORLD’S BEST-SERVED big city dwellers for public transport are in Moscow in Russia, Hong Kong in China, and Sydney in Australia, a new US survey reports.
And citizens of Tehran in Iran were better served with public transport than residents of any American city, the study found.
Sydney, Moscow and Hong Kong all had 170+ public transport vehicles per 100,000 residents, making it easy for non-motorists to get around. Barcelona (Spain) and Oslo (Norway) also had many options, although they are smaller cities.
In contrast, the average number of transit vehicles for US urban residents was just 27, and some cities had no more than a handful of occasional buses—leaving people without private cars unable to travel, said the new study by Transportation for America.
OPTIONS FOR ‘ORDINARY’ PEOPLE This lack of public transport greatly disadvantaged the “ordinary” or non-wealthy citizens in the US, and was also a pollution issue, since travel by private cars is far less environmentally friendly than use of public transport options, especially in non-EV countries.
Sydney, Moscow and Hong Kong were all large cities (between five and 13 million) with more than 170 public transport vehicles per 100,000 citizens, the study showed. In contrast, Houston had just 16, despite being the fourth largest city in the US.
US IS LAGGING IRAN The only city in the US with a strong public transport system was New York. But it lagged behind Iran’s capital. Tehran’s citizens are provided with 100 public transport vehicles per 100,000 citizens, above New York’s 88, researchers said.
“To give Americans the freedom to choose world-class transit options, just like citizens in other highly developed economies do, we would need to nearly triple the number of transit vehicles in service available today,” the study said.
“At current costs, realizing that vision could take a total investment of US$4.6 trillion over a twenty-year timeline.”
China, meanwhile, is building the world’s biggest public metro systems in multiple cities at breakneck speed. The provision of plentiful, affordable public transport systems is one of the factors that make the east feel more democratic than the west, commentators have said in the past.
Fellow University of Hawaii Hotel School alumni — what a treat to celebrate with fellow ex-Vancouverites who are about to settle into Zhongshan, right in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of southern China, not far from Hong Kong.
While Zhongshan is known for its incredible value and amazing Chinese cuisine, tonight we decided to switch it up with a fantastic Italian dinner in downtown Zhongshan — and it did not disappoint!
And the celebration continues: I’ll be joining them May 20–22 for even more great food and good times in Zhongshan.

For the first time ever, China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has invoked its “blocking statute,” prohibiting all domestic entities from recognizing, enforcing, or complying with US sanctions imposed on 5 Chinese petrochemical companies for their alleged involvement in the Iranian oil trade. 中國商務部首次援引其「阻斷法」,禁止所有國內實體承認、執行或遵守美國對五家中國石化公司因涉嫌參與伊朗石油貿易而實施的制裁。
■ The “blocking statute,” a legal mechanism designed to neutralise the extraterritorial reach of foreign laws, was passed in 2021 but never invoked until now.
■ China’s MOFCOM said the US sanctions violate “international law and the basic norms of international relations,” and that the decision to invoke the “blocking statute” was made after conducting a comprehensive assessment and confirming that the US sanctions constitute improper extraterritorial application.

Amid a divided world and intense competition between major powers, Weijian Shan, Chairman of PAG, a group well-versed in the dynamics of both China and the US, pointed out in an exclusive interview with the joint production of Hong Kong Economic Journal and Now TV’s program “The Weijian Shan Interview” that to address China’s current issues such as “insufficient domestic demand,” “involution,” and “trade surplus,” aside from waiting for housing prices to stabilize, the country could also appreciate the significantly undervalued renminbi to mitigate trade frictions, shifting the economy from an export-oriented model to one driven by domestic demand.

Nury Vittachi: BREAKING NEWS: CHINA’S LEADERSHIP THIS WEEKEND said “no” to a global order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump—and today analysts worldwide are holding their breath to see if the mercurial leader will back down.
The Trump administration last week again ordered the world, including specific firms in China, to stop trading with Iranians—the latest in a long series of similar instructions issued since early 2025.
But China said on Saturday that it will not comply—and ordered five named major Chinese oil traders to carry on, ignoring Washington’s threats.
TECHNICALLY ILLEGAL
America’s global orders are technically cases of illegal transnational economic coercion.
But the US’s huge economic and military power has meant countries normally obey, in fear of US secondary sanctions.
Not this time.
A defiant statement from China’s commerce ministry pointed out the obvious, which is that the US measures unlawfully restrict normal trade with third countries.
“The Chinese government has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that lack authorization from the United Nations and a basis in international law,” the department said on Saturday.
The Chinese also said the US action “breaches international norms”—a reference to US long-held defiance of World Trade Organization rules.
PLAYING HARDBALL
To protect its firms, China also used the law. It deployed a blocking measure it had introduced in 2021 to shield Chinese companies from the unfair transnational techniques favored by the United States.
It issued an order banning recognition, enforcement, and compliance with US sanctions aimed at the Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery Co and four other firms in the same trade.
That means the Chinese firms, and the banks and other organizations which deal with them, have to stand together.
What will happen next?
Trump could issue additional repressive secondary sanctions on the Chinese banks and others: this would be a major escalation in the US assault on world’s free trade.
Or the unpredictable US leader could fail to move ahead, and then just shift to something else—such as relaunching the US attack on Iran.
YOU CAN SAY NO
Either way, China’s pushback is significant. The world normally obeys American extraterritorial orders out of fear of secondary sanctions.
But China has shown that you can say no.
The friction comes just weeks before Chinese leader Xi Jinping is due to have a summit with US President Donald Trump.
