THE WRONG ADVICE CAN DESTROY YOUR BUSINESS, YOUR REPUTATION, AND EVEN PUT YOU IN HARM’S WAY!
Choosing the Wrong Consultants, Trusting Misguided Friends, Relatives, or Colleagues, and Ignoring Experienced Advice Can Have Serious Consequences.
By Johnson Choi, MBA

In international business, bad advice is not merely expensive. It can destroy your business, damage your integrity, ruin your reputation, and even put your personal safety and freedom at risk.
After more than four decades of involvement in international business consulting, particularly in China since 1985, I have learned one important lesson:
The most dangerous advice often comes from people you trust the most — friends, relatives, colleagues, and self-proclaimed experts who speak with great confidence but lack the experience, judgment, and cultural understanding necessary to give sound advice.

China.

- Beware of Consultants Who Promise Political Connections
Over the years, we have encountered clients who told us that certain so-called China business consultants demanded six-figure consulting fees upfront.
Their sales pitch was simple: They claimed to have personal relationships with high-ranking Chinese government officials who could help their clients obtain special treatment, approvals, or business advantages.
Some even suggested that substantial portions of these consulting fees would be used to influence officials through improper payments or bribery.
My question has always been: Are you hiring a professional business consultant, or are you paying someone who may expose you to criminal investigations and destroy your company’s reputation?
In the United States, professional lobbying is a legally regulated industry, although critics sometimes describe the influence of money in politics as a form of legalized bribery. However, lawful lobbying and illegal bribery are not the same thing.
In China, as elsewhere, offering bribes to government officials can result in serious criminal consequences.
A responsible international business consultant should help clients understand the laws, regulations, local culture, business environment, and commercial realities — not promise shortcuts through questionable political connections.
Good consultants protect their clients from unnecessary risks. Bad consultants may become the greatest risk themselves.
- A True Story From the 2010 Shanghai World Expo: One T-Shirt, One Hour of Detention, and One Valuable Lesson
In 2010, the Hong Kong.China.Hawaii Chamber of Commerce obtained 14 VIP passes to attend the Shanghai World Expo.
Our group included 14 participants, among them an American-born Chinese (ABC) friend from Hawaii.
Before entering mainland China, I noticed that this friend was wearing a T-shirt with two large words printed across the front:
“NO DEMOLITION.”
He explained that a friend in Hawaii had given him the T-shirt and specifically encouraged him to wear it when passing through Chinese Immigration and Customs, claiming it would somehow result in VIP treatment.
Having worked with China since 1985, I immediately recognized that this was potentially troublesome advice.
The slogan could be interpreted as a political protest related to property demolition, a sensitive issue in certain circumstances.
I advised him to change into another T-shirt before going through immigration.
His response surprised me.
He insisted that his good friend in Hawaii had specifically instructed him not to listen to anyone else!
Despite my warning, he stubbornly refused to change.
At that point, I decided not to argue any further.
The result?
Thirteen members of our group passed through Chinese Immigration and Customs without incident.
Our friend wearing the “NO DEMOLITION” T-shirt was stopped, detained for questioning, and held for approximately one hour.
When he finally rejoined our group, he was wearing a completely different T-shirt — one without any printed slogan.
I did not need to say another word.
The lesson was obvious: His friend in Hawaii gave the advice, but he was the one who had to face the consequences in China.
His friend was thousands of miles away, comfortably enjoying life in Hawaii, while he was left to explain himself to Chinese authorities.
This experience illustrates an important principle:
Never assume that advice given by someone sitting comfortably in another country is appropriate, safe, or practical in the country where you must personally face the consequences.
- The Mbappé Controversy: One Moment of Poor Judgment Can Endanger a Global Career
The controversy involving French football superstar Kylian Mbappé and an alleged parody involving former Chinese leader Chairman Mao Zedong offers another reminder of how cultural insensitivity can potentially damage an international reputation.
The specific allegations and reported consequences should be independently verified before being treated as established facts.
However, the broader lesson remains relevant.
A world-famous football player is not merely an athlete. He is also an international public figure whose career depends on millions of supporters, commercial sponsors, international organizations, and relationships across different cultures.
What might seem funny or harmless to a group of friends could be viewed as deeply offensive by audiences in another country.
That is why professional managers, advisers, and public relations teams are so important.
Their responsibility is not simply to negotiate multimillion-dollar contracts or sponsorship agreements. It is also to protect their clients from unnecessary controversies, reputational damage, and avoidable financial losses.
If a manager knowingly encourages a client to engage in culturally offensive behavior without explaining the potential consequences, that manager has failed in a fundamental professional responsibility.
Likewise, friends who encourage reckless behavior without considering the consequences are not necessarily doing their friend any favors.
A successful international celebrity should understand that fame creates responsibilities, particularly when communicating across different cultural and historical backgrounds.
- Friendship Is Not a Substitute for Professional Competence
One of the most expensive mistakes in business and personal life is confusing friendship with expertise.
Just because someone is your childhood friend, classmate, relative, business associate, or longtime colleague does not mean that person is qualified to advise you on international business, foreign laws, politics, culture, or public relations.
Some people give advice because they genuinely want to help.
Others give advice because they want to appear knowledgeable, influential, or important.
Unfortunately, good intentions do not guarantee good judgment.
And the consequences of bad advice are rarely shared equally.
The person who gives the advice may lose nothing.
The person who follows it may lose everything.
- My Advice After More Than Four Decades in International Business
Never judge a consultant solely by impressive titles, expensive suits, influential photographs, political connections, or promises of special access.
Judge that person by demonstrated experience, professional integrity, knowledge of the local environment, and a proven ability to protect clients’ interests.
Before accepting important advice, always consider:
- Does this person possess genuine experience in the country and industry involved?
- Is the advice lawful, ethical, practical, and culturally appropriate?
- Does the adviser understand the potential financial, legal, and reputational consequences?
- Is the adviser willing to accept accountability if the advice proves disastrous?
- Am I following the advice because it makes sense, or simply because it comes from someone I trust?
Conclusion: The Person Who Gives You Bad Advice May Walk Away — But You Must Live With the Consequences!
My experience at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo taught me something that remains just as relevant today.
One friend in Hawaii suggested wearing a politically sensitive T-shirt. Another friend in China had to endure the questioning.
The same principle applies to business consultants who promise political favors, friends who encourage reckless conduct, and advisers who fail to understand the cultures and laws of other countries.
A genuine friend tells you what you need to hear, not merely what you want to hear.
A competent consultant helps you avoid trouble, not walk straight into it.
A responsible manager protects your career, not exposes it to unnecessary controversy.
And remember:
When bad advice leads to disaster, the person who gave it may disappear — but you are the one left paying the price.
Choose your advisers carefully. Protect your integrity. Respect local laws and cultures. Never allow someone else’s ignorance, arrogance, or poor judgment to destroy what you have spent a lifetime building.
