Today’s China is like the Chinese who came to Hawaii in the last century—having to survive under extremely hostile and adversarial conditions

“Today’s China is like the Chinese who came to Hawaii in the last century—having to survive under extremely hostile and adversarial conditions.” By Johnson Choi, MBA. International Business Consultant since 1985

“Half a Century in Hawaii: A Chronicle of the Chinese Entrepreneurial Spirit I Have Witnessed—From Chun Afong to Today’s Immigrants, a Legacy That Endures”

Having lived in Hawaii for over fifty years, I have personally witnessed how Chinese pioneers, in a society dominated by whites, built their way up from sugarcane fields and small grocery stores through mutual aid, hard work, and wisdom—eventually establishing business empires spanning banking, real estate, and media. This very spirit is exactly what I saw in the Chinese immigrants I met in the 1970s and 1980s, and in their first-generation children. They started from nothing, worked tirelessly, and not only achieved business success but also gave back to their communities with selfless patriotism. This century-spanning struggle is the most moving testament to the resilience of the Chinese people.

Why is DeepSeek willing to wait a year just to buy Huawei chips? This isn’t about buying chips—it’s about betting on a domestically produced alternative future! I have to give DeepSeek and Liang Wenfeng a thumbs up.

On September 4, Bloomberg broke a big story:

DeepSeek placed an order with Huawei for 160,000 Ascend 950DT chips, with a total order value of $2.56 billion. These chips are destined for a 1-gigawatt data center in Inner Mongolia, which at full load would consume enough electricity to power 750,000 households.

But here’s the kicker—Huawei’s total production of the 950DT this year is only a few hundred thousand units, and key components like high-end memory are bottlenecked. Completing this order will take at least a year. DeepSeek has even turned to Beijing for help in coordinating.

What’s even more surprising is that these chips are primarily for AI inference, not training. In the most critical area—model training—DeepSeek still cannot do without Nvidia.

DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng himself has said that about four Huawei chips are needed to match the performance of one Nvidia chip, and that Huawei still lags about two years behind in technology. Yet, even so, DeepSeek placed this “knowing it would have to wait, knowing the gap” mega-order.

Think about it—we get impatient waiting for a phone to ship, but here’s a $2.56 billion order, and they’re willing to wait a year.
