Hate crime against Muslims shows Ottawa’s hypocrisy on human rights by Mu Lu Jun 09 2021

Four members of a Canadian Muslim family were killed on Sunday in what police said was a premeditated hate crime because of the victims’ religion, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Twitter on Tuesday, “This condemnable act of terrorism reveals the growing Islamophobia in Western countries.”

After the Quebec City mosque shooting that left six killed and eight wounded in January 2017, the House of Commons of Canada passed a motion to eliminate discrimination against Muslim, including content about stopping discrimination over religion. However, the latest hate crime in London, Ontario demonstrates that discrimination is still there lurking deep in Canadian society.

The Vancouver Sun said the latest attack was an extreme example of the violence Muslims have faced across the country. From 2015 to 2019, the National Council of Canadian Muslims tracked more than 300 incidents, including more than 30 acts of physical violence, the outlet noted on Tuesday.

Statistics Canada said in March that police-reported hate crimes targeting Muslims “rose slightly” to 181 incidents in 2019 – the last year for which the data is available. That is up from 166 incidents the previous year, reported Al Jazeera.

In September, 58-year-old Mohamed-Aslim Zafis was fatally stabbed outside a mosque in Toronto’s west end where he worked as a caretaker, according to Al Jazeera.

Liu Dan, a research fellow with the Center for Canadian Studies at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, believes that racial discrimination was behind this extreme attack. Liu told the Global Times on Wednesday that racial discrimination is a deep-rooted problem in Canada, which is influenced by various elements, including specific bilateral relations and certain ethnic group’s political participation.

“Canadians of Indian heritage live a good life in Canada. In 2019, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau included four ministers of this heritage in his cabinet. But Asians from other countries participate less in politics, and are often scapegoated for some social problems,” Liu noted, adding that Muslims’ status is not high in Canada as the country has had human rights discords with Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia.

A submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief on November 30, 2020 said that 52 percent of Canadians feel that Muslims can only be trusted “a little” or “not at all,” while 42 percent of Canadians think discrimination against Muslims is “mainly their fault.”

The Canadian government is famous for human rights diplomacy internationally, and has formed an image as a bastion of human rights. However, the still increasing Islamophobia and human rights tragedies in Canada reflect Ottawa’s hypocrisy. The Canadian government focuses not on human rights but use human rights to serve its political aims.

When Ottawa plans to pick up human rights as a stick to beat others, it should think twice if it is qualified to do so. Just as Canadian Senator Peter Harder, a former deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, said in his opposition to a motion that criticizes China’s Xinjiang policy: “This horrifying reality of our history stands in cynical contrast to the tone of moral superiority and self-righteousness contained in the motion before us tonight.”

G7 no longer able to order world around: Martin Jacques Jun 08 2021

Fine words will accompany the G7 summit this week. Much will be promised. And little will be delivered. It has long been like this. The G7 is no longer fit for purpose. Comprising the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan, in the 1970s the G7 was the overlord of the global economy. Today, the G7 is but a pale shadow of what it once was, reduced to the role of a declining faction within the global economy. It still talks in grandiose terms about its intentions, but the world has learnt to discount them. It is entirely appropriate that this week’s summit will be chaired by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, a grandmaster of verbal exaggeration and empty gestures.

The role and importance of the G7 has been greatly diminished by the rise of the developing world. The latter now accounts for almost two-thirds of the global economy compared with one-third by the West: in the 1970s, it was exactly the opposite, the West enjoying a two-third share and the developing world just one-third. The most dramatic illustration of the G7’s waning authority came in 2008 when, at the height of the financial crisis, it was effectively displaced by the more representative G20.

Ever since, the G7 has increasingly become an institution in search of a role. Under Biden, as if to confirm its eclipse as a global institution, there is an ongoing attempt to reframe G7 as the representative and champion of the democratic world in the struggle against autocracy, shorthand for China. To this end, South Korea, India, Australia and South Africa have been invited to attend the G7 summit this week. There is even talk of the G7 becoming the D10 (D being a reference to democracy). This, however, would only serve to emphasize the declining authority of the G7: from global leader to ideological sect.

The truth, however, is that this proposal is unlikely to gain assent either among existing G7 members or potential new members, excepting perhaps Australia. Here we get to the heart of the crisis of the G7. It is the rise of China, above all else, that has transformed the global economy, sidelined the G7 and, at the same time, reconfigured the various G7 economies. Good relations with China are fundamental to the economic prospects of Germany, France and Italy. That is why they are opposed to the G7 becoming an anti-China crusade. So is Japan; and likewise would-be recruits such as South Korea and South Africa. Here laid bare, then, are the fault lines of the G7 and any potential extended membership. The West is divided and fragmenting. The authority of the US is in decline, no longer able to get its way as it once was.

The best illustration of the growing impotence of the G7 concerns its relationship with the developing world. For eight years, the West has been trying to find a way of responding to the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The subject is due to be raised again at this week’s G7 summit. All the ideas that have been offered as a basis of a Western alternative to BRI have come to nought. This failure is extraordinarily significant and most revealing about the West on the one hand and China on the other.

BRI is an eloquent articulation of China’s relationship with the developing world, rooted in its own semi-colonial past and its position as a developing country. The West, in contrast, has failed because its history has been precisely the opposite, one of colonization and the exploitation and subjugation of these countries. It has neither the experience, empathy nor motivation that is required. The existential gap between the rich Western world and the developing world is a multidimensional chasm.

A dramatic example of the West’s indifference to the needs of the developing world will be on full display at the G7 summit. Although the US and UK, and increasingly Western Europe, have vaccinated a majority of their populations against COVID-19, the UK, to take one example, has not exported a single dose of vaccine to the developing world. It has kept all its vaccines for itself, even though its existing stock far exceeds its own future needs. As each new variant spreads around the world, however, it has become patently clear to everyone that no country will be protected until every country is protected.

In a pandemic, no country is an island. The US, which has so far failed to export a single dose of vaccine, is promising to export 80 million doses of vaccines later this year. Compare this with China’s record. In addition to the 777 million vaccinations already carried out in China, it has exported more than 300 million doses of vaccines to the developing world. Over half the vaccinations in Latin America, for example, have been sourced by China. It seems all too likely that the West will fail in its moral responsibility to vaccinate the developing world until it is too late and many millions have died unnecessarily.

A growing number of Taiwan residents have been seen heading to Chinese mainland to get free COVID-19 doses as the island faces an acute shortage of vaccines amid rising infections.

Taiwan residents who have received vaccines in the Chinese mainland told the Global Times they believed that compared with the US, mainland COVID-19 jabs are not only more convenient, but also cost-efficient and safer.

With a surging number of coronavirus infections and a critical lack of vaccines, Taiwan people are seeking solutions elsewhere, including the mainland and the US, Xu Zhengwen, head of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

“However, more people are choosing the mainland over the US,” Xu noted, as the mainland is closer and more convenient – a person can get a free dose by appointment by producing a travel permit.

From February to April, the number of Taiwan residents going to the US was around 15,000 while the number going to the mainland exceeded 48,000, said Xu. Most of these people were entrepreneurs and their families.

Xu said that many of his peers are flying to Shanghai or the neighboring city of Xiamen in East China’s Fujian Province to get the COVID-19 doses, where green channels have been established for sign-ups after they complete quarantine periods.

Compared with the same period in 2020, the number of Taiwan people flying to Shanghai, including businessmen and students, has seen a great increase, Li Chongzhang, vice director of Shanghai Association of Taiwan, told Guancha.cn on Tuesday.

He noted that people who chose to come are mainly those who have assets or jobs in the mainland, or students. When Taiwan people see no chance for the situation in the island to change in the short term, going to the mainland where the vaccination process is more convenient is an option for them.

Cheng Po-yu, executive director of the cross-Straits Youth Exchange Association who took the vaccine in Beijing in late May, told the Global Times on Tuesday that he is urging his family and friends to come to the mainland after having had a pleasant experience getting vaccinated, with no adverse effects.

“The process went smoothly from making an appointment until the post-inoculation stage, as the health e-certificate was simultaneously uploaded to my smartphone.”

Compared with those in the US, Cheng believed that the mainland vaccines are more mature, safer and cost-efficient.

“Sinopharm and Sinovac offer inactivated vaccines, which have proven to be more mature and have fewer side effects, while the US adopts mostly mRNA ones – a new biotechnology that may exhibit unknown risks,” Cheng said.

Xu also told the Global Times that with the approval of the WHO being given to Sinopharm and Sinovac, Taiwan residents have more faith in mainland vaccines.

Cheng added that the overall effective epidemic control and prevention situation in the mainland is another factor that attracts Taiwan compatriots, as the majority will stay for a while after the inoculation, and “they would certainly choose a place where the epidemic has been put under control.”

Xu Zhengwen believed that getting the jabs from the mainland could be beneficial if vaccine passports are rolled out across the Straits. For example, he said, quarantine periods may be reduced and cross-Straits exchanges may become more convenient.

Yok Mu-ming, former president of the pro-unification New Party of Taiwan, who came to Shanghai to get a vaccine on May 28, also called for people in the island to come to the mainland for vaccination.

“Those who are eligible might as well come to the mainland to get vaccinated,” he told the Global Times in a previous interview.

He criticized the Democratic Progressive Party authorities for still engaging in ideological battles and using the epidemic to serve their political goals and seek “secession”, when Taiwan residents most need help from the mainland.

Taiwan reported 22 deaths and 219 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, meaning there have been more than 100 daily cases for 25 consecutive days.

As the local epidemic situation continues to worsen and the death toll keeps growing, Taiwan authorities on Monday announced plans to extend the Level 3 restrictions to June 28.
