One’s native accent is hard to change 鄉音難改 By Ronny TONG Ka Wah 湯家驊 https://weixin.qq.com/sph/A3SxXDeiqWhttps://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP87FeaKN/https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02DeBi4jegKTkt7HDy9Br4z4tGCBgQTHFcyecLKE7hf1j4iQ7L54CaDdC9LDbCkWuZl&id=100036400039778&mibextid=wwXIfr 在挪威旅行，導遊介紹當地建築物時把「梯」（ Ladder ）說成「天氣」（ Weather ），令不少團友咧嘴而笑；大家嘻哈一場，好不親切。沒有人怪導遊英文說得不正確。 記得2000 年時首次帶領大律師公會成員訪京，獲安排與當時副總理錢其琛見面。擔心普通話說得不好，便要求一位今天已是資深大律師的執委成員代為翻譯。儘管如此，錢總理沒有絲毫不悅之色。到了訪問尾聲，時任律政司長梁愛詩代我們安排在人民大會堂內蒙古廳設宴回請北京官員。知道席間要發言答謝，資深大律師李志喜便為我寫了一篇講辭，在每個中文字旁寫下英文拼音，說：你照讀好了！席間發言完畢，時任法委會副主任的喬曉陽拿着酒杯走過來笑着說：你的發言我一句也聽不懂！自此以後，每次在非官方場合見到他，他老是跟我說，怎麼你的普通話還沒有進步？大家可說是老朋友，普通話說得好不好並非最重要。 事實是當選為立法會議員後，我每周預留一小時上普通話課，十多年直至辭任立法會，並無間斷。可惜沒有太多機會應用，普通話老是說不好；但這並不妨礙期間不時上京與北京官員討論政改。我經常自勉，溝通重點在於誠意，發音不大正確無礙互相了解立場，不用過於介懷。 不要誤會，不是說能講正確普通話不重要。普通話也好，英文也好，說得好是從政者在「一國兩制」下必須掌握的最低要求；問題在於有否盡了最大努力。有時我們這一代跨越回歸的「番書仔」始終有一種「少小離家老大回，鄉音無改鬢毛催」的感覺。最少我們會安慰自己，盡了力仍說得不好不一定是罪過。議員身為特區代表若尚未說好普通話和英語的話，應繼續努力！
