Video: How Is U.S. GDP Inflated by High Drug Prices?

The same nine-month cancer treatment costs US$10,000 in China but US$200,000 under a U.S. pharmaceutical brand name!

With Chinese national health insurance, eligible patients in China pay only US$3,400 of the US$10,000 cost.

In China, the drug’s US$10,000 price contributes to GDP calculations, while the same drug’s US$200,000 U.S. price can contribute a much larger amount to U.S. GDP.

Same drug, same treatment—but a 20-fold price difference! Does a higher GDP always mean greater economic value?

American logistic expert lives in China reporting from China video with English and Chinese subtitles: Last year Americans flew to China for a $10,000 cancer drug. Now it’s $200,000.

China draws tens of thousands of patients from across the world, who access cutting-edge drugs and therapies at low cost.

The US Food and Drug Administration allows for American patients to buy medicines abroad, and bring them back to the US, in certain very limited circumstances.

Western pharma giants have discovered a massive new profit center, in buying global distribution rights from top Chinese labs, then aggressively marking up the price for patients in North America and Europe.
