THE RISE OF CHINA: WHEN CHINESE SPOUSES NO LONGER SEE AMERICA AS THEIR DREAM DESTINATION

THE RISE OF CHINA: WHEN CHINESE SPOUSES NO LONGER SEE AMERICA AS THEIR DREAM DESTINATION

A Remarkable Shift in Attitudes Toward Immigration, Marriage, and the American Dream

By Johnson Choi, MBA

Last month, a longtime client came to my office with an unexpected complaint.

His daughter had married a highly educated, successful Chinese professional living in Shenzhen, China.

The parents naturally assumed that their new son-in-law would be delighted to move to the United States, obtain a green card, and eventually become an American citizen.

To their surprise, he completely ruled out moving to America. Even more surprising, their American daughter agreed with him and decided to build their future together in China.

This was not the first time I had encountered such a situation.

Two years earlier, another client told me a similar story. His American son had married a Chinese woman in China. Instead of bringing his wife back to the United States, he decided to remain in China permanently.

What a remarkable reversal from the attitudes I encountered 20 years ago!

Two decades ago, in my business experience, most Chinese nationals who married American citizens viewed the opportunity to obtain a U.S. green card and eventually American citizenship as a tremendous advantage.

For many, America represented better career opportunities, greater prosperity, and a brighter future for their children.

Today, however, the equation is changing.

Increasingly, I encounter well-educated, financially successful Chinese professionals who have little interest in immigrating to the United States, even when marriage offers them a potential pathway to permanent residency.

In some cases, they make their intentions absolutely clear before marriage:

“I am happy to marry you, but I have no intention of moving to America. If we marry, our future will be here in China.”

Why this dramatic change?

China’s extraordinary economic transformation over the past four decades has fundamentally changed the choices available to its educated and professional population.

Cities such as Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, and Zhuhai offer modern infrastructure, extensive transportation networks, sophisticated digital services, and substantial career and business opportunities.

For Chinese professionals who already enjoy successful careers, established businesses, family connections, and comfortable lifestyles, moving to the United States may no longer represent an improvement.

They may instead face higher housing costs, more expensive healthcare, unfamiliar employment conditions, and the challenge of rebuilding their professional and social networks.

Of course, many Chinese nationals still pursue opportunities in America, and individual choices depend on family circumstances, careers, and personal priorities.

But the experiences shared by my clients illustrate something important.

The American Dream is no longer the only dream.

For a growing number of internationally minded Chinese professionals, remaining in China is not a compromise. It is a deliberate choice based on the opportunities and quality of life they believe they already enjoy.

And increasingly, some American spouses are choosing to join them.

Twenty years ago, the question was often: “How can I get to America?”

Today, for some successful Chinese professionals, the question has become: “Why would I leave China?”

That is one of the most revealing changes I have personally witnessed in more than four decades of international business.

The rise of China is not merely changing the global economic landscape. It is changing where people choose to live, whom they marry, where they raise their families, and what they consider a better future.

The greatest evidence of China’s transformation may not be found in economic statistics alone, but in the personal decisions people make about where they want to spend the rest of their lives.
