Why Are Some People Stuck in the US When Hong Kong and the China Greater Bay Area Are So Much Better? By Johnson Choi, MBA, International Business Consultant since 1985

Two things prompted me to write this.
Yesterday at Happy Hour, an old friend asked: if you keep saying life is so much better in Hong Kong and China, why do you send videos every week enjoying life in San Francisco and Hawaii? He said my followers will be confused.
After Happy Hour, I met with clients for tax planning. The client’s brother had moved back to Hong Kong decades ago and was back in Hawaii for a wedding party. During a brief conversation with his wife, she said there is no place better than Hong Kong. I asked if she would ever consider retiring in the US or China. She said no way.
My wife loves singing parties, and she loves to sing. I attend all these parties to support her. Some of you may know that we owned K-2 Karaoke Japanese Restaurant at McCully Shopping Center for three years. I did not sing even once, nor do I like Japanese food. Sometimes, things are not what they seem.
Regarding my client’s brother’s wife and her love of Hong Kong: they stayed briefly in Hawaii and left decades ago. Their experience was similar to Ronny Tong, who got his green card in the 1980s and gave it up months later. It is also similar to movie director Ko Chi-sum, who moved to Hawaii and gave it up a year later. All three said the foolish decision was obtaining their green cards, and the smartest decision was giving them up and returning to Hong Kong, never looking back.
My answer to my old friend at Happy Hour yesterday is this: my life in Hong Kong since my grandfather was born there in 1875 has been far superior to my life in the US. It is human nature to look back to one’s roots for a better life.
