As kids, we knew the bullies: the pretty ones who picked their friends, or the strong ones who ruled by fear.

Twenty years ago, the U.S. played that role perfectly—dictating terms, threatening aircraft carriers, and toppling regimes under the guise of democracy.

Today, that script has flipped. The U.S. can still kidnap a leader, but the threats ring hollow. After six months of confrontation with Iran, Washington hasn’t just failed to win—it’s seen most of its Middle Eastern bases destroyed.

Whether the U.S. poses as a petulant child or a heavy-handed adult, the result is the same: it’s not winning. In fact, it’s losing badly.
