Guangxi was recently hit by Typhoon Maysak, triggering severe flooding in Guigang City. A middle school there was heavily inundated, leaving nearly 4,000 teachers and students trapped. A brigade of the Army of the Southern Theater Command rushed to the rescue, including a soldier named Wu Jie. They piloted assault boats into the flooded campus and fought on the front lines of the disaster relief efforts.

During the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Wu Jie—then just 12 years old—was trapped under the rubble but was fortunately rescued by the People’s Liberation Army. Eighteen years later, he donned his military uniform and rushed to the rescue with his unit. He said, “Now that I am wearing this uniform, no matter how dangerous or difficult the road ahead may be, I must be the first to appear wherever the people need me!”
