Another top Chinese scientist returning to China to help his motherland.
Da Bo, a Chinese-born semiconductor prodigy, has returned to China, leaving his role at Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). His research was instrumental in underpinning TSMC’s 3-nanometer chip production line in Japan.
He is a USTC graduate who became the youngest independent principal investigator in NIMS’s history and one of the few Chinese researchers deeply involved in frontline international semiconductor projects after 2022. His work included leading a joint project with Lam Research on technologies applied to TSMC’s 3nm line, and he also swept top awards in Japan for his research.
Da Bo has now returned to China to join the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) as a chair professor, hoping to help the country narrow the technology gap. He also aims to bring Chinese semiconductor equipment, materials, and components up to global standards.
