It must be hard to write articles and headlines for the N.Y. Times to create endless fake news to demonize China when everything at Beijing Olympics turned out so nicely. 當北京奧運會的一切都變得如此美好時,要為《紐約時報》寫文章和頭條來製造無休止的假新聞來妖魔化中國一定很難.

Professor Ling-chi Wang of UC Berkeley: As the Beijing Winter Olympics approached, all eyes in the MSM were on the weather of the Chinese capital. Beijing is notorious for its extreme heat in summer and cold in winter. It is supposed to have the worst weather throughout the year and virtually no blue sky because it routinely have smog, pollution, and toxic air. Photos of the city often time have people wearing face-musks. Remember all the dire warnings before the 2008 Summer Olympics?

Well, guess what happened thus far since last week. There is clear and clean air, blue sky, aided in part by the government’s efforts to reduce the pollution and smog by shutting down some factories in the metropolitan area. The city even delivered plenty of snow for the ski slopes, thanks fo the massive water delivering system built several years ago that brings water from China’s west to eastern cities, including Beijing. The result is the picture on the top of the front-page of the NY Times this morning and other color photos in the internet edition.

This is not supposed to happen. The challenge, as usual, is to produce articles that will turn good things into bad things. Going to Davos, Switzerland to get some negative comments? The result is what we read in the print edition below. Instead of praising the city for doing a good job for the Olympics and its athletes, it turns a genuine good-will effort into something negative and mean-spirited. Needless to say, there.we will be seeing plenty to stories that cast negative lights on the Beijing Olympics, city of Beijing, and the Chinese government. That is The NY Times mission!

Throughout the Winter Olympics, The NY Times will do its best to leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth and a nightmare experience for the athletes because the paper hates China and it has nothing but bad wishes for China and its people. It editors and headlines writers are contortionists in journalism.

Where is Peng Shuai? Taking part in a foreign media interview, but guess what? They still don’t believe her! The US passes legislation on Olympic opening ceremony day to spend not just $300 million, but $500 million on smearing China, Twitter ramps up the promotion of anti-China content, another COVID-positive European athlete complains about “human rights” after not being let out of quarantine, and Sean Hannity posts his most anti-China content yet. This is episode three of Reports on China’s Beijing 2022 Quick Fix, let’s get reporting!

First up, Chinese tennis superstar Peng Shuai accepted an interview with French media outlet L’Equipe on February 6 in one of her first interviews since Western media decided she had disappeared last November. In the interview, she thanked those who were concerned about her before asking the media to lay off. She said: “I never thought there’d be such worry, though, and I’d like to know, why was that the case? There was a huge misunderstanding in the outside world following this post. I don’t want the meaning of this post to be twisted anymore. And I don’t want any further media hype around it.”

Western media are still ignoring her requests, though. Australia’s 7 News ran with the headline: “Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai speaks to L’Equipe in first interview since sexual assault allegations,” despite her saying clearly: “Sexual assault? I never said anyone had sexually assaulted me in any way.”

Whatever happened to “believe all women”?

On the day of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, the US House of Representatives passed a new piece of legislation earmarking a whopping $500 million to “combat CCP disinformation inside and outside of the People’s Republic of China,” among other things. The act, which they’ve called the America COMPETES Act, includes many other parts aimed at anti-China spending, including massive spending on ensuring Americans can study China’s “many languages” outside of the influence of China’s successful Confucius Institutes, as well as funds to “promote democracy in Hong Kong.” Now, we all know what that means! You can read the legislation yourself by downloading it using the link under this video.

Many Twitter users, including Daniel Dumbrill, have noticed recently that Twitter has been going overboard with their promotion and pushing of anti-China content on the platform. Daniel tweeted: For a few weeks now, Twitter has been exclusively promoting anti-China articles as recommended tweets. No positive story has ever appeared under the pushed “You might like” tweets. I’ve confirmed the same is happening to many others in this coordinated effort to “guide” us on track.” He posted four examples, but it’s interesting to note that despite being helped by Silicon Valley, none of the anti-China posts received much traction. If you do notice any positive China content promoted under Twitter’s “You might like” system, do let me know.

Another COVID-positive European Olympian is complaining of “human rights violations” because Olympics organizers refuse to let them out of quarantine while they are still returning positive PCR tests. Finnish ice hockey player Marko Anttila’s coach, Jukka Jalonen, complained in a media interview that the players food wasn’t good enough in quarantine, and that he’s healthy and should be allowed to return to the village and compete, despite not having returned two negative COVID tests within 24 hours, as per the rules.

“We know that he’s fully healthy and ready to go and that’s why we think that China, for some reason, they won’t respect his human rights and that’s not a great situation,” the coach said. According to Reuters, more than 350 Olympics participants tested positive for COVID-19 on arrival in Beijing.

Finland, with a population of around 5.5 million, has recorded around 500,000 COVID cases, which adds up to nearly 10% of the population. Unfortunately, for Anttila and his coach, the Beijing Winter Olympics don’t afford people the human right of being able to infect others with a possibly deadly virus.

Finally today, FOX News’ Sean Hannity has broadcast perhaps his worst and most disgusting anti-China propaganda yet. Let’s take a quick look, but I do warn you that much of what he says may upset some viewers.

Now, I think most sane viewers will see through what Hannity is trying to do here, but make no mistake: it’s reports like these that are leading to the uptick in anti-Asian hate crimes across the USA, as if that country didn’t have enough problems to begin with. This is not the sane analysis of a level-headed man, this is the desperate drivel of a country rapidly falling from their perch, acutely aware that their hegemonic days at the top are numbered. The reason I played this clip, as opposed to ignoring it, is because we really need to be prepared for more hate like this in the days, week, and years to come. Tyrants don’t step down without a fight. Mr Hannity, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Western elites embarrass themselves by attacking naturalized Chinese athletes

Western elites embarrass themselves by attacking naturalized Chinese athletes. The 18-year-old US-born Chinese skier Gu Ailing, also known as Eileen Gu, was, again, bashed by US media. by Xia Wenxin Feb 07 2022

Fox News host Will Cain on Wednesday called Gu out as an “ungrateful” traitor. Cain argued that it is “shameful” for the young athlete to turn her back on the US, the country that allegedly raised and turned her into a world-class skier in exchange, for “monetary gain.”

This is not the first time some voices in the West are taking aim at naturalized Chinese athletes. China’s first naturalized track and field athlete, Nina Schultz, known as Zheng Ninali in China, gave up her Canadian citizenship in 2021. However, the young lady, who is of Chinese descent, was criticized by some in Canada for her supposed indifference to “human rights violations” in China.

Besides, according to many Western media outlets, naturalized Chinese figure skater Zhu Yi was “savaged” by Chinese netizens after she fumbled her 2022 Winter Olympics debut on Sunday. Some have indeed attacked Zhu online, questioning her qualification and capability. But targeting young individual athletes and attacking them on social media is going too far. Instead, we should be more empathetic and supportive toward them.

Many athletes dream of standing on the world stage to compete with the world’s best sportsmen and women. Yet, few have this opportunity. If representing another country allows them to realize their dreams, then there is nothing wrong with some athletes choosing the path of naturalization. Alex Hua Tian, a naturalized Chinese equestrian, once informed UK media China has given him “the opportunities that riding for Team GB would never have done.”

On the other hand, since naturalized athletes are often in the spotlight, they can use such attention to promote their sport, especially in smaller, lesser known sports. Gu Ailing and Alex Hua Tian, for example, have made many Chinese people know more about freestyle skiing and eventing.

There are many naturalized athletes in the US, but it seems that US media never fusses about them. According to Shen Yi, a professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Fudan University, it is no surprise that the US displays such a double standard.

“In fact, it is not even appropriate to call it a ‘double standard’ in a sense,” Shen argues. For some Western forces, there is only one standard: Everything must revolve around the West, and only the West can win. Nobody should tread on this “golden rule.” This is abundantly clear under the single standard of extreme self-centeredness just how increasingly narrow-minded the West has become.

The US has grown to be a global power by attracting global talent. Now Washington criticizes those who choose Beijing over it, displaying American elites’ calculated snobbery.

Apart from Gu, some Chinese athletes born in foreign countries also decided to obtain Chinese citizenship to compete for their motherland in this Winter Olympics for various reasons. This includes US-born figure skater Zhu Yi (Beverly Zhu) and Canadian-born ice hockey player Ye Jinguang (Brandon Yip). This “reverse migration” in the field of sports marks a new era and perhaps, a sign of something new.

In the future, more foreign athletes will likely choose to compete for China. Some Western media outlets that constantly lampoon China’s naturalized athletes only prove their “sour grapes” mentality. To those media, we would like to respond with what Gu said to one of her haters on TikTok: “Cry ab it [Cry about it].”

As US pandemic deaths reach 900,000, the NYT surprisingly reports that Americans are “moving on” — just as an unnamed White House source tells Politico that the Biden administration needs citizens to take a “we’re moving on” stance. In other words, journalists are trying to manipulate public opinion for strategic reasons

China and Russia: Together for a shared future

China and Russia: Together for a shared future, The strategic nature of China-Russia relations has never been more prominent, attracting worldwide attention. 中俄:攜手共進 中俄關係的戰略性從未像現在這樣突出,舉世矚目. by Song Fang

Editor’s note: Song Fang is a lecturer at the Institute for International Strategic Studies in the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. The article reflects the author’s opinions and not necessarily the views of CGTN.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on February 4, 2022. For China and Russia, the meeting is not only of overall and strategic significance but also reached practical cooperation agreements, promoting the further deepening of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination. The strategic nature of China-Russia relations has never been more prominent, attracting worldwide attention.

One of the important outcomes of the meeting was the issuance of a joint statement that reflects the highly consistent position of Russia and China on major international issues. The world has entered a period of turbulence and change due to the interwoven impact of the centennial changes and the pandemic. Both countries practice true multilateralism, promote democracy in international relations and achieve world peace, stability and sustainable development.

The joint statement clearly stated the two powers’ views on democracy, development, security and order, pushing back against Western hegemonic discourse by clarifying political ideas such as “democracy,” “human rights” and “multilateralism.”

The joint statement also made it clear that the new type of state-to-state relationship between China and Russia has gone beyond the military and political alliance model of the Cold War era. There is no limit to China-Russia friendship and no forbidden area for China-Russia cooperation.

The second important outcome of the meeting is the signing of a series of cooperation documents between China and Russia, which cover cooperation in areas such as anti-monopoly law enforcement and competition policy, sustainable development, health and quarantine, sports exchanges, global satellite navigation system, oil and gas, and informatization and digitalization. They are of major concern to both sides.

China and Russia are economically interdependent. China is Russia’s largest economic and trade partner. The latest statistics show that China-Russia bilateral trade in 2021 hit a record high of $140 billion. In the context of a sluggish global economy, it’s truly remarkable that China and Russia have made such achievements in trade and economic cooperation. On this basis, a series of new cooperation agreements further consolidate China and Russia’s all-around cooperation.

Strategically China and Russia need each other. The world today is marked by changes unseen in a century, and China is moving to the center of the world stage. China faces pressures from the United States, which makes its relationship with Russia important.

At the same time, with the increasing pressure from the West, developing its relationship with China is also essential for Russia. Deepening cooperation with China may be the most effective way for Russia to deal with Western sanctions.

Putin’s visit to China has three main objectives. The first is to support the Beijing Winter Olympics. Some Western countries have repeatedly slandered China on the so-called human rights issue and announced that they would not send official and diplomatic representatives to the Beijing Winter Olympics in an attempt to politicize sports and obstruct the normal holding of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

In sharp contrast to these countries, Putin was the first foreign leader to explicitly declare his intention to attend the Beijing Winter Olympics. His remarks once again conveyed to the world the particularity of China-Russia relations. Both China and Russia oppose the politicization of sports and abide by the Olympic spirit of equality and justice.

The second is to exchange views with Beijing on world affairs. The situation in Ukraine is on the verge of boiling over. A war between Russia and Ukraine could break out at any time. The United States already has thousands of troops around Ukraine ready to join the fight against Russia.

The current Ukraine crisis is another big issue for geopolitical competition between the West and Russia caused by the enlargement of NATO. The sensitivity of Ukraine’s geography makes any event that could alter its character highly likely to alter the geopolitical landscape. Russia hopes China will back it in the face of Western pressure.

The third is strengthening China-Russia relations. China and Russia are currently discussing the possibility of building a new natural gas pipeline to China via Mongolia, the China-Russia Natural Gas Western Route. As for China-Russia joint financial infrastructure, the aim is to deepen China-Russia cooperation in the energy sector. In the wake of the current Ukraine crisis, U.S. officials are threatening the toughest possible sanctions against Russia. It is urgent and necessary for Russia to deepen cooperation with China. A number of economic, military and infrastructure cooperation projects will greatly reduce the pressure Russia is facing.

China and Russia see each other as a strategic counterweight to the United States and share many common interests. Mutual assistance between China and Russia will effectively balance the United States and defuse the strategic pressure that the strengthening of the transatlantic alliance may bring to China and Russia.

The China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership is one of the most pivotal elements of stability in contemporary international relations. The two treat one another as equals and with the respect they deserve. The relationship has also injected stability into today’s uncertain world. China and Russia should step up coordination and cooperation in international affairs, show great generosity, and act as major powers in fighting the epidemic, boosting the economy and tackling climate change, among other pressing issues that the international community is anxious to address.
