Overseas Chinese (especially those born in HK, Macau and Taiwan) returning to China’s Greater Bay Area for retirement can enjoy medical insurance (referred to as “Yibao” by retirees) for only 549 yuan per year. The application conditions are very simple: you only need to have a rental contract of at least six months or have purchased a property to apply for a residence permit. Once you obtain the residence permit, you can simultaneously apply for medical insurance.
If you choose not to purchase medical insurance, local medical costs are about one-seventh of those in the United States. Therefore, for a middle-to-upper-class family in the U.S., a monthly retirement income of $5,000 to $8,000 is more than enough to live comfortably in the Greater Bay Area.
If 24-hour in-home care is needed, the cost for a nurse is approximately 13,000 yuan per month (about $2,000).
