Professor Ling-chi Wang of UC Berkeley: Your close reading, exegesis, of the DOJ announcement, is right on!. The public is led to believe that the China Initiative Program is officially shut down. That, of course, in the wrong reading and conclusion. 加州大學伯克利分校的王靈智教授:您對 DOJ 公告的仔細閱讀和解釋是正確的! 公眾被認為是“中國倡議計劃”正式關閉。 當然,這是錯誤的閱讀和結論.
Chinese has a very apt, succinct, folksy characterization of what the DOJ has done: huantang bu huanyao (换汤不换药), literally, the same medicine with a different name, meaning, a change of form without a change in substance.
DOJ did not apologize for what it has done to all Chinese and Chinese American scientists and engineers.
I also have not heard anything about what the NIH memo sent to all 12,000 NIH-funded research projects across the U.S. by Dr. Francis Collins last year, urging them to keep a watchful eye on their Chinese project participants. This memo racially profiled all Chinese researchers as suspects and effectively turned all research institutions into spying and law enforcement agencies of the government. How chilling and unnerving!
