This is very convenient for the US–and US environmentalists–because it has huge reserves of natural gas.

Natural gas technically releases about 1/3 the amount of CO2 of coal, i.e. it is “cleaner.”

However, it’s a myth that natural gas is better than coal in reality.

Coal, until burned, is very stable. Gas constantly leaks, and in particular it releases methane gas, a GHG that has a Global Warming potential 86-96 X greater than CO2 over the short term.
If methane leaks at 8% leaks it is more damaging than coal.
